The History of the Yorkshire Collie Club.

The Yorkshire Collie Club was founded in 1952 by several enthusiasts, to serve the Yorkshire area which covered the largest concentration of Breeder/Exhibitors of the time. Originally the club held two shows per year, an Open show and a members Limited show, scheduling mixed classes for Rough and Smooth Collies. This continued until 1970, when separate classes were introduced for the two varieties.

Five years later the club was declared to be for Rough Coated Collies only.

The first Championship show was held in 1963 at the Corn Exchange Leeds, the judge being Mr J Broderick of Shearcliffe fame, and there were 94 exhibits.

The club quickly rose in strength and in 1968 the first edition of the now famous Yorkshire Collie Club Handbook was published, and this very professional yearly publication quickly became a ‘must have’ on every Collie lovers book shelves. Initially edited by Audrey Chatfield, Gordon Duncan and Jack Wigglesworth, it evolved over the following 21 years, eventually becoming the predecessor of the International Collie Society handbook. A full set of Yorkshire Collie Club handbooks are still considered an enviable addition to any collection of Breed memorabilia

The present objectives of the club are:

1) To promote and encourage the breeding of Rough Collies.

2) To support and give exhibitions of Rough Collies.

3) To protect and advance in every legitimate way the interests of
the Breed and of the Members of the Club.
